Vermelha

Fernando and Humberto Campana, 1993
Edra, Italy

The embodiment of Edra's quest for both new "sensual" shapes epitomising comfort, and one-off artistic, handcrafted designer pieces, the Vermelha chair is characteristically distinctive and eye-catching. This wrap-around armchair is a composition demanding several days manual work to build, and requiring high expertise for the weaving. The five hundred meters of special rope with an acrylic core, covered in soft cotton, are first woven into the frame to create a structure, and then plaited by consecutive overlapping, leaving sufficient surplus for a kind of random weave to create an unusual padding.
