Missoni Home Collection New at Quasi Modo

February 9th, 2012

Quasi Modo is very excited to announce that we are now carrying Missoni Home! As a leader in the fashion world, Missoni is recognized for their innovative use of pattern and beautiful fabrics. It should come as no surprise that they do an equally beautiful job dressing up the home as they have done dressing people over the last fifty years. You can expect to see Missoni pillows, rugs and poufs donning the shelves, walls and floor space at Quasi Modo’s Ossington location in the next upcoming days.

New at Quasi Modo – LZF Lighting

November 17th, 2011
Made exclusively of wood veneer, these sculptural lights are an exciting new addition to our collection of designers. LZF Lighting was founded in 1994 and despite being a relatively young company, they have racked up an impressive amount of achievements and design awards. This should come as no surprise as these lights really do stand out from the crowd. Their displays at this past years trade shows such as ICFF in New York and Qublique in Berlin have garnered a lot of  attention and with good reason. Check out this video documenting the hard work and passion put into show casing these works of art.

OneTwenty Modern integrates with Quasi Modo Modern!

October 18th, 2011

In 2008 Martin Myers opened up a second store on Ossington Avenue called OneTwenty Modern. Our intention was to have a new space offering different brands and newer designs than the classics that Quasi Modo Modern had become so well known for.  Recently we’ve decided to integrate both stores under one name, Quasi Modo Modern, the original store that has garnered so many great clients since 1981.  Although we will remain having two different locations, clients now have the benefit of one stop shopping as our great collection of brands and designers will be offered at both locations. While you’re more likely to see bigger pieces like beds and sofas on Ossington and smaller items such as chairs, lighting and accessories on Queen, you will be able to obtain information and place orders at either location. We hope this integration will make it easier to keep meeting all of your design needs.

Making the Losanges Rug

August 6th, 2011

We’ve been excited about the Losanges rug since we saw it in person at ICFF earlier this year. To produce such a unique piece, the Bouroullec brothers reinterpreted the traditional Persian rug using the ancient kilim technique. You wouldn’t believe how technically complex the making of the Losanges is but now you can see for yourself with this video that documents the entire process.

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy (the festivities for which are being held at the Reggia di Venaria Reale in Turin until December 2011) Edra is participating with a singular version of the Flapsofa designed by Francesco Binfarè, 2000. It has been specially upholstered in the colors of the Italian flag for Esperienza Italia: an exhibition and program of events dedicated to Italian history, art, fashion and design. Viva Italia!

Quasi Modo Modern Celebrates Women in Design

April 3rd, 2011

Written by Caitlin Agnew

It’s no secret that some of the world’s most talented designers are also highly accomplished women. Without the creativity of women like Eileen Gray, Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, Lilly Reich and Patricia Urquiola, we wouldn’t enjoy such household classics as the Bibendum Chair, the Eames Lounge Chairs or the Barcelona Chair. Many of the beloved items at Quasi Modo were created by a new wave of fascinating female designers, including the three below, who consistently add the most interesting work to our collection.

Paola Navone

Paola Navone
This multi-disciplinary Italian designer is the main force behind the legendary design house Gervasoni. Born in Milan, Paola Navone graduated in 1973 from the Turin Politecnico with a degree in architecture. Throughout the seventies she worked with the best in avant-garde Italian designers, invaluable experience which would help her to win the first ever Osaka International Design Award in 1983. Working in fields beyond design (Navone also has the impressive titles of architect, art director, interior designer, critic, teacher and event planner on her extensive portfolio), she’s also contributed her talent to international labels like Swarovski, Knoll International, Roche Bobois and Piazza Sempione to name a few.

Nani Marquina

Nani Marquina
Spanish designer Nani Marquina launched her eponymous line of rugs and textiles in 1987 after studying industrial design at the Escuela Massana of Barcelona. As the first textile designer to focus her production on rugs, Marquina has always placed emphasis on sourcing the finest raw materials and on perfecting the manufacturing process. Six years into the business, she moved her facilities to India, thereby solidifying the unique aesthetic that would come to characterize her brand. The company has earned international acclaim with several awards, including Entrepreneurial Woman of the Year, a title Nani received from FIDEM in 2007.

Kaori Shiina

Kaori Shiina
A designer with the world class Bonaldo team, Kaori Shiina studied art and literature at the University of SEIJO before uncovering her true passion at Tokyo’s Gaguin Institute of Design. Working with Urbino Lomazzi since the eighties, Shiina branched out with her own studio in 2005. Primarily focusing on industrial design, Shiina’s work includes furniture, ceramic tiles and even consumer products such as tea canisters decorated with wooden leaves. With interior design projects in both Italy and Japan, Shiina’s work truly bridges the aesthetic gap between the two stylistic traditions.

Evi Style’s Tessuti Light

April 3rd, 2011

Recently one of our favourite light fixtures, the Tessuti from Evi Style, was used for a project in South Africa.

Evi Style's Tessuti Light

The Tessuti owes it beauty to the traditional Murano art techniques which are used to make each glass hook. Tessuti is available in a variety of different sizes and configurations and can be ordered in crystal, smoke‐grey, amber or polished white. You can also order a combination of these colours. We especially love the idea of interweaving the crystal and amber coloured glass hooks. Whether you choose a wall sconce or a larger chandelier like the one pictured here, the Tessuti is a perfect way to add little or a lot of drama to any space.
